Title: 'Forever'
Fandom: Labyrinth
Prompt: Weekly Prompt #5: Stimulate
Character/Pairing: Jareth
Rating: G
Summary: This world of his can be a frightful bore, at times.
Authors Notes: Fic = Mine. Characters = Not Mine. Crossposted to beattheblackdog on LiveJournal for Challenge #142: Forever.
At times, Jareth finds himself wondering just how long his reign will last. This world of his can be a frightful bore, at times. There's more to life than just whisking away young children whose caregivers were irresponsible and selfish enough to wish them into his keeping. He'd like to see a bit of the rest of life, now and then.
As for his subjects, the less said about them, the better. After all, the goblins he rules aren't the most stimulating conversationalists, being generally almost dismally stupid. Oh, there are exceptions; and it isn't as though they're his only subjects.
For all that, they might just as well be, given that those subjects he possesses who aren't as thick as bricks tend to steer clear of their King. Fair enough, perhaps; there are times when Jareth isn't sure that he'd even keep himself company, if he were presented with the choice. But there's only so much that magic can do; and he's sure that more than one of him would be far too much to tolerate.
All the same, between the occasional infantile abduction and resulting challenge to his authority in keeping his abductees, there's precious little for Jareth to do to keep himself amused. He can alter the Labyrinth as he sees fit, if he feels up to bothering. But even that can get boring, after a while. The sentries who patrol every twist and turn are either accustomed to the occasional changes, or else they're too dimwitted to notice a difference.
Every now and then, Jareth almost finds himself wishing that his subjects would attempt an uprising, or that some exterior personality would breach the Labyrinth and challenge his right to rule. While he has no doubt that he could quell such an attempt with little effort, it would at least be something to stave off the almost endless ennui.
Never mind the idea of abdication. It's too absurd a notion to entertain for even a fraction of a second. His sovereignty is absolute, and he has no intention to simply walk away from the throne. Besides, there's no one around worth considering as a potential successor. And somebody else would only do a splendid job of mucking it all up, anyway. Some jobs are best done by the person who began them.
It seems, in that case, as though Jareth's only option is to rule.
What the hell. If he has to rule forever--if ruling forever is possible--then that's what he'll do.
Forever doesn't sound too bad, really.
