Prongs, Padfoot, Moony, and Wormtail were back at it again. The four boys hunched over the Marauders Map and watched Flich pace back and forth.
“He’s been at it for an hour!” Sirius guffawed before flopping down on a tattered chair. They were hiding out at the Shrieking Shack for the afternoon.
The foursome had discovered it thanks in part to Madame Pomfrey a few years back. Everyone thought the old dilapidated house was haunted and the friends meant to keep it that way. Especially for Remus’s sake. On nights when he wasn’t transforming into a werewolf, they used it as a get-away and for general mischief making.
“He’ll probably write us up again,” Peter said with sigh. He’d already received three howlers that year because of Flich’s tattling.
James tossed his lucky golden snitch in the air and caught it deftly with his left hand. “Don’t be such a drip, Wormtail. We’ll be back at Hogwarts before Flich can shake his quill.”
Remus peered out of one the boarded windows. It was winter again and snow blanketed Hogsmeade like a thick fluffy white quilt. He was only a few days away from a full moon and James could tell that his friend was getting anxious.
“Heads up, Moony!” He warned before tossing his friend the snitch.
Remus caught it at the last second. “You could have taken my head off,” he said before tossing it back.
“With this thing? Not likely.”
James leaned back against his chair and studied his friends. They were all seventh years. After they graduated from Hogwarts there would be no more days sneaking off to the Shrieking Shack. Or playing tricks on Flich. They’d be grownups with grown up responsibilities. He wasn’t ready to think about that just yet.
“Have you found a date for the Yule Ball?” James asked no one in particular.
“No,” Peter said dejectedly.
That was no surprise to any of them. Peter was the oddest looking fellow of them all. He wasn’t athletic like James or smart like Remus. And next to Sirius he looked like troll. But the boys had taken him under their wing and he was one of them—The Marauders as they liked to call themselves.
“I asked Sylvia Finkley, but she laughed at me,” Peter said.
James clapped his friend on the back. “You’ll find a date, wormy. It’s still early. What about you, Padfoot?”
Sirius sniffed one of his every flavor beans before popping it into his mouth. Earwax. “I hate when that happens,” he muttered. He frowned as he thought about James’ question. “Well, I was thinking about asking Lily Evans.”
James’ brow went up with interest. He didn’t know Sirius liked her—well, everyone liked Lily. He just didn’t know that Sirius liked her enough to ask her to the Yule Ball. He’d been trying to work up the nerve to ask her himself. They’d gotten off to a rocky start with each other, but he thought their relationship was turning a corner.
“I didn’t know you liked her.”
“What’s not to like?” Sirius sad. “She’s pretty. She’s the most popular girl at Hogwarts and—”
“She hates all of us,” Remus interjected.
“Well, she mostly hates Prongs” Sirius said with a smug grin. “I let her borrow an extra quill in potions class and she smiled at me.”
James shook his head. He wasn’t going to say anything about his plans to ask Lily to the dance. He owed Sirius one anyway from the last time. Last year they both liked Su-Mi Pak at the same time and Sirius let him ask her on a date. The relationship lasted all but two weeks, but he did get in some quality snog time with her.
“Isn’t she friends with Snivellus though?” Remus asked from his perch on the window seal. “She’ll probably go with him.”
James grimaced. He couldn’t see what Lily saw in that greasy-haired, pale skinned, freak. He always moped around school in his too-short robes and he smelled like mildew.
“I heard them arguing outside of McGonagall’s class the other day. She seemed pretty hacked-off." Peter said. He was proud to have offered some useful information to his friends.
“Probably because he’s been hanging around those death eaters,” James said absently.
Remus shrugged. “Either way I doubt any of us have a chance with her. Besides, Snivellus might try to hex you if you come within two feet of her.” Lupin snickered.
Sirius jumped up from his seat. “I’d like to see him try. I should put a bat bogey curse on him just for the hell of it.”
The four boys laughed in unison. Severus Snape was often the unfortunate target of their bullying. Most of the time it was harmless jokes. Except for the time Sirius had nearly convinced him to go to the whomping willow while Remus was in his werewolf form.
“If you do that, Padfoot, Lily will never agree to go to the ball with you,” James said, coolly. “You know how protective she is of him.”
“I know.” He withered.
“I’ll do it!” Peter perked up. He was always so eager to please his friends. If he wasn’t James he was trying to impress, it was Sirius. “I think it’s a little overdue if you ask me.”
The three boys looked at each other and burst into laughter. “You were just complaining about howlers,” James said. “There’s no way you’d risk putting a bat-bogey hex on Snape.”
Peter used his robe to wipe his dripping nose. “Yes, I would!”
James rolled his eyes. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“How about this,” Sirius said. “I’ll bet you ten galleons that you won’t do it.” Sirius eyes darted toward James. Between the two of them he knew they could come up with the money. They both came from wealthy wizarding families.
“That’s a bit much, don’t you think?” Remus said, the voice of reason.
“I’ll do it! I’ll do it tomorrow.” Peter stood to his feet and puffed out his chest.
Sirius flopped down into a chair. “It’s a deal then. Ten galleons if you hex Snivellus.” The two boys shook on it.
“I can’t wait until tomorrow,” James said with excitement. .
"Well, this should be interesting," Remus said.
