The Leaky Cauldron was in high spirits that night as jubilant Hogwarts graduates filled the shabby bar. They made it through seven years of rigorous studies in witchcraft and wizardry and the former seventh years were bursting at the seams. They were no longer apprentice witches and wizards, they were adults now. Many of them already found their places within the Ministry of Magic. James was excited to start his new life outside of Hogwarts. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but he was confident about his prospects. Flushed with excitement, he looked around the table at his friends and beamed. They had their whole lives ahead of them.

James put his arms around Lily and pulled her close. Somewhere along the line, she had gotten over her disdain for him and the two became a couple. Now, they were inseparable. When one saw Lily, James was close by. He turned to look at her and admired her fiery hair and blue eyes.

“What?” she asked with a smile.

“I was just thinking.”

“About what? You have this look on your face.” Her eyes sparkled under the dim light.

“I was just thinking about how beautiful you are.”

Lily blushed a deep red. “James,” she said shyly.

She always did that when he complimented her. It was one of the things that he found endearing. While at Hogwarts she’d been a Perfect, Head Girl, and one of Slughorne’s prized students. She was an all-around gifted witch. Everyone loved her, and she never let it go to her head. That was another thing he loved about her. James sat back in his chair. It suddenly hit him.

Love.

He loved Lily Evans.

“You’re looking at me funny again. What’s gotten into you, Potter?” she teased.

James ran a hand through his hair and grinned. “I’m just happy. We did it!”

“Here, here!” Sirius said from across the table.

The group lifted their mugs of butterbeer and let out a boisterous cheer. The only one who didn’t seem very enthused was Peter who sulked quietly in his chair.

“Cheer up, Peter! You’re acting like it’s a funeral,” Sirius said jovially from his perch at the head of the table.

Peter used the back of his hand to wipe the drink from his upper lip. “I am cheerful. It’s just…everything is different now. We’ll all be off in different lives. Without Hogwarts…”

James' lips pulled into a tight smile. He understood what Peter was feeling. In quiet moments he had shared those same thoughts. Hogwarts was the glue that held them all together for seven years. He often wondered would their friendship survive without it. James looked at Sirius and Remus. They were his friends through and through. Sirius was practically a brother to him. His family had taken him in during their fifth year. Remus… well, Remus was the level-headed one out of them all. He kept them together. But Peter… he was the outlier, the one who didn’t quite fit in. They had taken him in under their wing during their first year. None of them had very much in common with him and James found his sniveling more annoying than not. So, he understood his worry.

“With or without Hogwarts we’ll still have each other,” Lily said. She was bright and optimistic as usual.

“I’ll drink to that!” Remus said lifting his mug again.

“Really?” Peter’s eyes glowed with hope as he looked at Lily.

James always suspected that he had a crush on Lily. It was harmless. “Of course, Wormy. Friends for life. We’ve got nothing but time ahead of us. But that won’t change anything.”

“We’ll still go on our adventures?” he asked hopefully.

James chuckled. “Of course.”

“To adventures!” Peter said after a few minutes.

“We’ll have so many adventures,” Lily chimed in. “In fact, you all should visit me in New York this summer.”

The table paused. James wrapped his arms around Lily again and squeezed her shoulders as he beamed proudly.

“New York?” Sirius asked.

“Yes! Lily’s gotten herself an internship at the Magical Congress of the United States.”

Congratulations rang out from the table again as each friend took another drink. The ruckus at their table drowned out the sounds around them. James ordered another round of Butter Beer and cheered his girlfriend on. He was proud of her. As part of the Ministry’s exchange program, Lily was chosen to do a summer internship at the MACUSA. Since she was going to be part of the Magical United Nations, it was an opportunity of a lifetime. When she first told him, he’d been worried. New York was a long way from London. What if she met someone else? What if she met a muggle? They had one row about it once before she assured him that an internship wasn’t going to change her feelings for him. Still, as collateral, he kept the ring he’d gotten her tucked safely in his pocket for just the right time.

“Way to go, Lily!” Remus said. “Tell us about it.”

“Well,” Lily began shyly. James knew she hated when the spotlight was on her. “I’ll be there all summer working under Ruby Billbottom as part of their initiative with no-majs with magical abilities.”

“No-maj?” Sirius asked around a gulp of his drink.

“That’s just their way of saying muggles.”

Sirius mouthed the word no-maj and shrugged. “Muggle seems easier.”

“Well, you know those Americans,” James said. “Lily’s going to knock them dead.”

The redhead flushed again. “It’s only for a couple of months. But you all should come and visit. I’m looking forward to learning everything I can about international diplomacy.”

“Well, we’re all adults now. We can pretty much do what we want. Why not take a trip to New York?"

“You’ve been doing what you’ve wanted for years now, Sirius,” Remus joked.

“Hahaha. Not according to the Potter house rules. But I’ll take that over my crummy family any day.”

James clinked glasses with his friend. “Cheers to that. If it hadn’t been for us, Sirius would have been a bonafide Slytherin.”

“Hardly,” he said with disdain. “I can’t even go around them anymore. They’ve all been struck dumb. I heard my cousin mumbling something about ‘The Dark Lord’ and how I’ll be sorry for betraying the family. It's all rubbish.”

James let out a boisterous laugh. “Dark Lord, my foot. I wager he's just some puffed up wizard with way too much time on his hands. Dark Lord, indeed.”

Peter’s eyes shifted nervously. “I—I heard that he’s gaining a following. Most of Slytherin House is part of his 'Death Eaters.'"

“Pugh.” James rolled his eyes. “You mean the same surly club that Snivellous belonged to?” Lily dug her elbows into his ribs. He almost forgot. Snape was a taboo subject between them. He had to remember that although she was an unofficial marauder now, he couldn’t talk about certain things with her. Snape was one of them.

“I wouldn’t be too quick to write them off, Prongs. I’ve heard things…”

“Yeah, well, The Ministry will take care of them. And I hope they all end up in Azkaban, the lot of them.”

Lily ducked her head and frowned. James sighed and squeezed her hand in apology. He’d done it again. James wondered if Severus Snape would ever vacate their relationship. He hoped so.

“Of course, the ones who actually are causing trouble,” he amended.

“Well, I’m not too worried about it,” Sirius said with confidence. “Tonight, we celebrate! Let’s worry about the future tomorrow.”

“Cheers to that!” They all said in unison.
