adventdrabbles for December 16th.
Rose looked at the objects in the Doctor's hands with more than a little skepticism. "Doctor, aren't we a little old for sledding," she asked--unwillingly, as the idea of going sledding was decidedly tempting.
He grinned reassuringly. "Nah; of course not! You're never too old to have a little fun, Rose. Now," he added, pushing one of the sleds into her arms, "last to the bottom is a rotten Dalek! Allons-y!"
Before she could react, the Doctor was already a quarter of the way down the hill that he'd parked the TARDIS on, whooping at the top of his lungs. Laughing in delight, Rose leapt onto her own sled, enjoying the whooshing of the wind as she tried to catch up with him. Though from above the hill had seemed to slope more gently, the ride was over all too soon.
Perhaps that was just as well, however. For, when Rose reached the bottom, she found the Doctor struggling to extricate himself from the remains of what once had been a decent-sized snowman. He flailed and struggled, shooting her an aggrieved stare at the sound of her laughter.
"Rose, there's nothing funny about this," he declared, finally managing to pull himself upright. "That snowman came out of nowhere and attacked me!"
What little was left of the snowman had little to say in its defense, being effectively dismantled. Much of it, in fact, now coated the Doctor's clothing, and rested in his hair.
"I think," Rose replied between breathless giggles, "that poor snowman got the worse end of the deal!" Weakened from her laughter, she collapsed in the snow, watching gleefully as the Doctor ruefully dusted himself off.
He glared good-naturedly, taking up a handful of snow. "Oh, do you," he asked, before lobbing it at her.
Soon, the pair became engaged in a full-on snow battle, taking turns tackling each other into drifts that became flattened by the impact. They hardly spared each other enough time to pack the snow into balls, settling for flinging it as soon as they could gather some up.
Before they knew it, the sun had set, taking with it all semblance of warmth. Stars were just beginning to cut through the lingering hints of daylight, their glitter fresh against the wintry sky.
"We'd best get back to the TARDIS before we freeze," Rose sighed, reluctant to trek back up the hill.
The Doctor wrapped an arm around her, grinning. "Suppose you're right. Still, nothing like some brisk exercise on a cold day to get you into the mood for a mug of hot chocolate!"
