"Here. You."
Startled, Yamasaki turned and stared at his lord. Hamada-san was impatiently gesturing to him.
"Me," Yamasaki nervously asked.
Impatiently, Hamada nodded. "Yes, you! Come here; I need you to taste this for me." He motioned toward the tray that had been brought to him. "I don't care to be poisoned, and I have plenty of enemies who'd be happy to see that happen."
Staring between his lord and the food, Yamasaki swallowed, suddenly feeling queasy. "You...you want me to taste it," he softly asked.
Reaching across to him, Hamada struck him over the head. "Didn't I just say as much? Why are you hesitating, anyway? Are you less loyal than I'd hoped? What's the matter with you? Are you so willing to neglect your duty to your lord? Is it that you want me to be poisoned, perhaps?"
His fear increasing, Yamasaki carefully crept closer. His mind raced as rapidly as his heart as he tried to come to a decision as to what he ought to do. It would be a severe blow to his honor to seem disloyal. As much as he valued his own life, he couldn't afford to disobey--or there might be a price to pay. Act the coward, and save his own life--albeit temporarily, and eventually be executed for treason? Or taste his lord's food, and possibly die of poisoning?
There was no easy way to handle the situation. At least, there was; but it was still unpleasant. He very much dreaded tasting the food--but there was still a decent chance that the food wasn't poisoned, at all.
The other guards were looking itchy. Prepared at a moment's notice to do their duty. It was time for Yamasaki to decide, before anyone else decided for him.
He bowed low, trying not to quake with fear. The delay was embarrassing enough; it would be worse to show how frightened he was. "Please forgive me," he murmured. "I will taste your meal for you, Hamada-san."
"Well, get on with it! I'm hungry," his lord grumbled.
Fearful, digging through a deep well of inner strength, he took up a bowl of rice and a pair of chopsticks. Picking up a bite-sized amount of rice, he chewed carefully. It was delicious, and just the right textu--
Gasping for breath as an otherwise undetectable poison took hold, Yamasaki clutched at his throat, before collapsing.
Unmoved, Hamada stared at the corpse. "Well, it looks like I'm going to need another idiot to act as my food-taster," he muttered.
