Buffy fought him with everything she had in her. Every time their swords connected, another piece of her fell away. She still loved him. Despite everything he’d done to her and her friends over the last few months, she still loved him. The knowledge of this both tortured and comforted her. She could feel. Yet, why did she feel for him? Angel’s—Angelus’ cruelty knew no bounds. He killed Jenny. He hurt Willow. He had been the cause of her pain. Even when he was Angel, loving him had been painful. She wanted to stop fighting. She wanted Angel back. Buffy hoped that somehow Willow could cure him and give him back his soul. Selfish. She knew it was selfish of her to want him back after everything that Angelus had done.

The longer they fought her hope slipped away. She had to face the reality that Angel was gone. He left behind an empty, soulless, shell of a man she once loved. She had to face the reality that he only loved her because of a curse. He was just another monster for her to slay. She was the slayer after all.

With one final thrust of her sword it was over. The sharp blade slid in like butter. How easy. But things were never that easy or simple.

Buffy…?

It was the way he said her name and the look on his face. She knew instantly that Willow did it. She cursed him again. But it was too late. The tomb was closing, swallowing Angel up with it, taking everything. Hot tears streamed down her face as she watched Angel slip away taking with him her love, hope, and happiness. Maybe if she hadn’t seen his eyes or heard him call her name, she could have walked away. But she did see his eyes and she did hear his voice. She would never forget the look of anguished confusion on his face when she killed him.

Zombie like, Buffy walked away from the burnt-out mansion and headed home. Home. How could she go home and crawl into her bed? How could she lay under her pink comforter surrounded by her childish hopes and dreams? The idea of it was so absurd it almost made Buffy laugh through her tears. There was no way that she could go back to that life. That life was over, sucked away by Acathla’s tomb. She couldn’t face her friends, Giles, her mom. They were all reminders that she would never be just a girl

She couldn’t do this anymore. This slayer thing was too hard, too painful. Let someone else have all that hurt and pain, Buffy thought. She had enough. She was done.

Now leaving Sunnydale. Come back soon!
