Title: 'Inexplicable'
Fandom: I Love Lucy
Prompt: Table #1/Prompt #6: Blackboard
Character/Pairing: Ricky Ricardo, Lucy Ricardo
Rating: G
Summary: For the most part, Lucy can't sing to save her own life.
Authors Notes: Fic = Mine. Characters = Not Mine. Crossposted to
doubledrabbles for Challenge #9: Vocal.
Ricky doesn't understand it. It just doesn't make any sense!
For the most part, Lucy can't sing to save her own life. Her vocal cords sound rusted, and she refuses to admit that she has a tin ear. When she tries to sing, it sounds like nails scraping across a blackboard.
She's got no talent. But she just won't accept that she doesn't have any. Even thinking of her making the attempt to perform is embarrassing for Ricky. And it's not fair for Lucy to keep accusing him of keeping her out of show business just because he wants her to be a housewife. He does want that, but that's only part of the reason. The rest is just...that voice!
But then there are other times when Lucy actually doesn't sound half bad. She manages to hit the right notes without any trouble. A performance that, under ordinary circumstances, ought to be a total disaster can sometimes turn out to be wonderful.
If there's any explanation for any of this, then Ricky can't make out what it might be. Maybe Lucy's just inexplicable. Maybe she always has been.
He guesses that it's ultimately just another part of her charm, like those big, beautiful blue eyes.
