Martha's right; the Doctor knows it. He hasn't been fair to her from the moment they met. She deserves better from him than evasion, than faking it.

He doesn't want her pity. But she deserves to know the truth.

So the memories come spilling out, still tinged with gold. He tells her about Gallifrey. Not everything; just the parts that it makes sense for a person to know. Not everything is worth knowing, even by the Doctor himself.

He never thought he'd be telling her this. But she deserves his trust. And talking it out might help his hearts heal.
