He was never quite sure which hit him first: The buzzing sound, or the mild jolts of electricity that started arcing through the space between his neck and shoulder. Either way, the cigarette he'd been smoking dropped from the abruptly failing grip of his fingers as the twinges of pain ran through him.

After the initial shock, Matsumoto became aware of something else. Something that automatically grated on his nerves: The sound of his comedy partner laughing uproariously. Or, rather, cackling like a devil.

He whirled in his chair, massaging his muscles, and yanking off an adhesive shock pad. "What the hell are you doing," he demanded.

Hamada gazed at him, his face going boyishly--and deceptively--innocent. "I was just making sure that the shock pad wasn't defective," he responded.

"Damn you," Matsumoto grumbled.
